Scenic flight offers respite, trip of lifetime

Fairy dust was not required when about 30 children took to the skies over Invercargill for a Saturday afternoon soar.

Though Peter Pan and Tinkerbell were absent, Mickey and Minnie Mouse were both on deck for Koru Care Southland’s first trip of the year.

While, in previous years, the charitable trust had taken children to various destinations, Covid-19 has forced a rejig in locales — this time a scenic tour of the region and Otago.

About 30 children living with different illnesses and disabilities had an afternoon tea at Invercargill airport before their fly-over in an Air New Zealand ATR 72-600.

Koru Care Southland board member Mike Bowman said the purpose of the day was to give children who had had a tough time the trip of a lifetime.

"Some of the children and families could really benefit from a day out."

Taking place on Southland’s hottest day of the year so far, it was a great day for sightseeing, Mr Bowman said.

Parents, siblings and caregivers were also able to to join.

Koru Care Southland committee member Pauline Gillan said it was a huge opportunity for the children to share the experience with the rest of their family.

"They’re often busy with the child that’s suffering the illness or has the chronic condition, so to take the extended family on this is a wonderful experience."

Carlene Turnbull said it was her family’s first experience with Koru Care and they were grateful siblings were invited.
