Southland school children came together yesterday to share with Waste Free Wanda (pictured) the findings of their microplastic data collection from their local rivers and streams.

The project run by the Southern Institute of Technology and supported by Enviroschools involved the testing of the data collected by the children.

Wanda learnt Hedgehope School pupils found seven microplastics in 30 minutes in the Hedgehope Stream and the children learnt ways they could help reduce the amount of plastic in waterways.

This included swapping common plastics with alternatives.

She found it interesting how schools closer to Invercargill found more plastics than those further away from the city.

The Micro Investigators Hui involved various activities, including the creation of a bottle cap mural.
