A 24-year-old man is currently before the courts facing charges over the incident in which a police car was stolen and used to ram a second patrol car on August 14.
He was arrested after a 40-hour manhunt in Te Tipua, near Mataura, and found in possession of one of the pistols.
Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham said today the second gun would be forensically examined as part of their ongoing inquiry.
"The investigation team has worked tirelessly since the incident with the assistance of other police districts and national workgroups," he said.
Supt Basham thanked the community for its support "which has been integral to achieving a safe and successful outcome".
Police have not yet said where the pistol was found.
