The Invercargill City Council confirmed it planned to close Splash Palace in June for necessary maintenance work.
Council group manager leisure and recreation Steve Gibling said there was a deadline for the completion of the work and he expected the whole facility to be open again in time for July school holidays.
A $1 million maintenance budget was included in the council’s long-term plan, he said.
The last time the facility was closed was in December 2009, although last year the council had to close its new hydroslides because of structural issues just three months after they opened.
The work included painting, replacing the bulkhead in the 50m pool and installing new flooring to make the entry into the shallow end of the leisure pool safe and comfortable.
As some pools would be emptied, they would carry out other key maintenance on pumps and pipes, plus chemical and heating systems maintenance.
The council could not keep the facility open for the work without compromising the health, safety and experience of the public, he said.
