Tourists rescued

Two tourists were rescued by helicopter from their trek in the Gertrude Saddle area in Fiordland yesterday.

Te Anau police said three men, one German and two French, were caught out on ice during their hike, and were unable to proceed, as they did not have the appropriate footwear for icy conditions.

One of the men managed to walk down off the track to alert emergency services on a satellite phone.

Police received the alert just before 2pm, and a helicopter was dispatched to pick up the other two trampers.

None of the three men was injured.
