Tunnel crash victims Chinese couple

Police have confirmed there were four Chinese nationals in a car that crashed at the Homer Tunnel near Milford Sound last night, including a husband and wife who were killed in the accident.

The driver of the Subaru Forester, a 33-year-old female residing in New Zealand, was left uninjured, while the front passenger was flown to Invercargill hospital with a lung injury.

The husband and wife who died at the scene were in their 50s and visiting the country.

Names could not be released as families were still being sought.

Police have said alcohol or the weather were not factors in the cause of the crash.
