A person died yesterday in a farm accident involving a tractor which rolled into a stream in a remote area of Southland.

A police spokeswoman said
a person died following a single-vehicle crash Otapiri Gorge Rd, between Caird and Stirling Rds, about 15km northeast of Winton. The incident was reported about 3pm.

The road was closed last night and the serious crash unit was investigating the circumstances of the crash, the spokeswoman said.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said an ambulance, a doctor and a manager attended the incident but were not required for transportation.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from Browns and Winton attended the incident, which appeared to be a farming accident where a tractor had rolled into Otapiri Stream.

Crews on scene helped to extricate one person from the tractor, the spokesman said.
