Members of murder victim Azalia Wilson’s family gathered at the Eastern Cemetery in Invercargill yesterday to mark what would have been her 25th birthday.

Ms Wilson’s mother Trinette Wilton said the family had made it a tradition to gather at the cemetery to commemorate Azalia’s life every year.

"People shouldn’t have to do this and spend important days at a cemetery, but every year there’s about 40 family members who trickle in and out all day, and we sit here and hang out."

Ms Wilson was murdered by Samuel Moses Samson, her partner, in November 2019.

In June this year, he was sentenced to life in jail with a minimum period of imprisonment of 17 years.

The family would reminisce about Ms Wilson.

"She was staunch and loyal so we tell a lot of stories about that, and about who her favourite people were — there’s always arguments about that."

Mrs Wilton advised people dealing with domestic violence to speak up.

"Don’t be ashamed, scared. It’s not a failure if you’re stuck in that. You can get out."

She encouraged families who knew someone dealing with the issue to continue to show support for the victim.

"Let them know that you love them so they always have a safe place to go."

The couple’s 2-year-old daughter Kiara Mae Wilson was among those visiting the cemetery.

Ms Wilson’s father Tony Wilton said it saddened him to think of the effects the situation would have on his granddaughter.

"She understands when we come here it is to see Mum and that is sad.

"... I really feel for Kiara because she is never going to know her mother’s love or father’s."

He knew there would come a day when she would ask questions about her parents.

"We don’t show her that pain because we want her to grow up happy, but we know one day she will ask."
