A group of young people who live and work in Wanaka and have shared ownership of a couch are considering giving the dark brown leather three-seater its own hashtag because of the public reaction it provokes.

Tom Twiss, of Wanaka, said they found the couch outside the Salvation Army store last February with a "free to take" sign attached to it.

They rescued the couch, named it "Steve" and had taken it with them on picnics to Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea ever since.

"We never get a bad comment [about the couch]," Mr Twiss said.

"Everyone who walks past just grins and some say it is pure genius."

Steve had already featured on the Wanaka Bad Parking Facebook page and was becoming a local identity.

If the couch became famous enough they were hoping to register it as an address so they could have takeaway pizza delivered, he said.
