Traffic congestion on State Highway 84 near the Three Parks development in Wanaka should start to ease in the next few weeks as the Sir Tim Wallis roundabout enters its final stages of construction.

Three Parks developer Allan Dippie said he was expecting a completion date of late April or early May.

Traffic coming into Wanaka from the east has been disrupted since Christmas due to the roadworks but when finished the $3.5million to $4million roundabout will connect SH84 with Sir Tim Wallis Dr.

‘‘This will be a milestone point in this project and provide much needed across town connectivity,’’ Mr Dippie said.

Sir Tim Wallis himself was on standby to perform the opening ceremony and Mr Dippie understood one of his grandchildren would be cutting the ribbon.

Once the roundabout was completed, work was expected to start on the construction of a pedestrian and cycleway underpass.

Mr Dippie said that the landscaping was under way for both projects, and 7000 native plants had been allocated for the roundabout alone.
