Snow Farm is set to host the New Zealand Cross Country Ski National Championships tomorrow, weather permitting.

The national championships, organised by the Waiorau Nordic Sports Club, will include race distances of 2.5km, 5km and 10km, starting from 10.30am.

Races have been categorised into a variety of age ranges and the two cross-country disciplines of classic and skate.

Waiorau Nordic Sports Club member Graeme Male said the cross-country community was not short of talent.

"Out of the simple village atmosphere, the best in the world can be found and make their mark," Mr Male said.

He referred to the example of recent Olympian biathlete Campbell Wright, who qualified and finished 32nd this year in Beijing in the 20km race.

Members of the Waiorau Nordic Sports Club volunteered at the recent opening of Musterer’s Hut at Snow Farm, which included providing catering on the day.

Snow Farm remains one of the few skifields in New Zealand operated by a charitable trust.

It hosts more than 15,000 user days annually, including for community groups, 33 schools from Christchurch to Invercargill, and the growing Olympic sport of biathlon.

Plans to reschedule the event have been made in the case of poor weather.
