Frowns have replaced smiles and laughter from children wanting to take a ride on one of Wanaka's most notable attractions.

Chipped fibreglass has meant the dinosaur slide at the Wanaka Dinosaur Park has been out of action for almost a month while it is repaired.

Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesman Jimmy Sygrove said the fibreglass on the side of the dinosaur was being repaired.

The slide was expected to be back in service in about two weeks at a cost of about $3500.

The dinosaur has been entertaining young visitors to Wanaka for more than 40 years. It was installed in 1976 by the Wanaka Jaycees.

The Edward family, from Christchurch, visited the park last week and at least one of them was sad the dinosaur was off limits.

Sarah Edward said her daughter Lily was slightly disappointed she could not slide down the dinosaur.

''She was a bit sad when we got here and she couldn't go on the slide, but there are other things to play on, so she got over it pretty quickly.''
