Wānaka FC were left frustrated after sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Northern on Saturday, in what was arguably one of their most complete performances of the season.
The first half was an even, scrappy contest despite Wānaka controlling possession, with goalkeeper Josh Shackleton producing a stunning diving save to keep the scores level at the break.
The game opened up significantly after half-time, with Wānaka pinning Northern back and creating a number of clear-cut chances.
The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Dom Plimmer’s nimble footwork created the space to cut the ball back for Dillan Kahale, who finished it off to make it 1-0.
Northern responded with a spell of sustained pressure, but Wānaka’s defence held firm and the home side pushed for a second goal that would have put the game to bed.
With just two minutes remaining in injury time, a Northern cross found its way to a well-placed header that crept inside the post to deny Wānaka all three points.
While the team was strong across the park, Dom Plimmer and Josh Bayly were best on ground.
The result felt cruel given their dominance, particularly considering the side were hampered by injury, illness and unavailability throughout the week.
