Dive squad in Wanaka for search

The police national dive squad has arrived in Wanaka to join the search for a man missing since midday yesterday.

Emergency services, LandSAR volunteers and Coastguard Wanaka were alerted after he disappeared while swimming in Lake Wanaka.

Police area response manager Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, of Wanaka, said the man got into trouble swimming out from Stevensons Island to retrieve a drifting boat.

Another person swam out to help but was not able to find him.

Police said today that a shoreline search was also being carried out on the island and members of the public might notice some areas cordoned off.

Police were being assisted by the Harbour Master.

Local boat users and a helicopter with paramedics on board also helped with the search yesterday.
