The iconic Cardrona Hotel has been sold to a group of mystery New Zealand buyers for an undisclosed sum.

The 162-year-old heritage-listed pub nestled between Wānaka and Queenstown will be run by Wānaka man Warren Barclay after being bought by a group of NZ investors

The group, who wanted to remain low key, would take over ownership on November 3.

Mr Barclay, the owner of hospitality business Experience Group, would be the Cardrona Hotel publican.

“We’re incredibly proud to take on the stewardship of such a special part of New Zealand’s story,” he said in a statement.

“The Cardrona Hotel holds a unique place in the hearts of so many, and we’re committed to preserving its heritage while exploring thoughtful ways to enhance its boutique accommodation, dining, event offerings and overall guest experience.

Outgoing owner Cade Thornton, who has overseen the hotel’s operations for the past 13 years, thanked the local community and guests for their support.

“It’s been an honour to be part of the Cardrona Hotel’s legacy, and we look forward to becoming ‘locals’ ourselves. We’re delighted to see it passed on to passionate new custodians who share a love for the region and its heritage.”

The sale of the hotel attracted national and international attention with more than 130,016 views online in five weeks.
