The pilot of an amphibious aircraft managed a safe landing at Wanaka Airport yesterday morning with only two of its three wheels down.
There was a full turnout of emergency services from Wanaka and Luggate as the Lake Renegade plane, ZK-WAI, circled once and then started landing.
The plane, with just the pilot on board, touched down on the airport's grass runway, skidding to a stop without further incident.
It is understood there may have been a hydraulic problem with one of the wheel mechanisms.
The American-built six-seater was later back on all three wheels outside a hangar at the airport.
The plane is registered to M.F. Jones, of Albany, Auckland.
