You have been great supporters of the Wānaka Sun this year, whether you have advertised with us, been quoted in stories, had stories written about you, been a regular columnist or simply picked up the paper each week to read it.
We are grateful for the support and the feedback we often receive here in the community, which has by and large been positive.
Having only stepped into the fold at the end of February I have near seen a full cycle of Wānaka news. The year started with the largest A&P show in the country, the Wānaka Show, which seems to get bigger and more successful every year. Looking forward to the next.
Since then we have seen visitor numbers up on the usual through the Winter, shoulder season disappear altogether as the town grows at all angles, Health Action Wānaka go in to bat for better health services in the area, a Clutha Rugby 125th birthday, a club title for them too, a newly elected mayor and a Richie McCaw heli flight with some deserving children, for good measure too.
Wheels at Wānaka grabbed the biggest crowd on record for its last show, which came with a few complaints about traffic management, but I am sure we can agree events that reel in record spends in the Upper Clutha are good. Little brother Hawea is growing at an exponential rate, the pub turned 100, Hawea legend Dick Cotter is creeping up there too — he celebrated 98 years in full fashion, happy birthday dear Dick.
It’s been a pleasure to write about some of the talented and unique characters around the Upper Clutha, as well as some stalwarts we’ve lost, or the hardships we’ve drawn attention to. My heart and thoughts go out this Christmas to families who have lost loved ones this year or those dealing with financial hardship, loneliness and sickness. Although we are growing into a little mini city, I see a beautiful community at the heart of it, so we should be mindful to check in on whoever is in need this busy summer.
The year has flown by, it has been a right treat — at times. Every time I meet one of you I am drawn in by the stories behind the career, job and person. It’s a privilege to be writing and again I say thank you to this community.
Merry Christmas, have a safe new year and we’ll be in touch in 2026.
