Treble Cone director says late start nothing unusual

Don't forget 2011.

That was advice from Treble Cone Ski Area director and former manager Jackie van der Voort yesterday.

Treble Cone has yet to open because of a lack of natural snow, although some was expected overnight and this morning.

She did not consider this year particularly unusual.

''There's been a history of Treble Cone being late one in every three [years] for the last 20 years.''

She recalled in 2011 it was mid-July before the snow came and then, suddenly, there was two metres in the car park.

The Otago Daily Times reported on July 18, 2011, all Southern Lakes skifields were enjoying excellent conditions after a late start but heavy snow in the previous week.

The late start did affect Australian skier numbers - as appears to be the case this year - but the late start of the New Zealand school holidays because of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, worked to the advantage of the skifields.

This year, the Australian school holidays are under way and the New Zealand holidays begin on Saturday.

Ms van der Voort said a late start put pressure on management, and customers got ''a little bit anxious''.

''But the snow always comes.''
