Two injured at Cardrona ski field

A man has suffered serious injuries in a carting accident at Cardrona, one of two people hurt at the ski area on Saturday.

The 22-year-old man was injured in what is understood to be a mountain carting accident - a new activity at the ski area over summer where people ride downhill on low-slung, specially designed tricycles.

Cardrona Alpine Resort general manager Bridget Legnavsky said the accident was ''definitely human error,'' and WorkSafe did not need to be notified.

St John spokeswoman Neha Concisom said the man was transported in an Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

Shortly after, another helicopter was deployed when a 42-year-old woman suffered moderate injuries mountain biking at Cardrona.

She was also flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The Cardrona Bike Park near Wanaka features a network of downhill trails making use of the ski field's chairlifts.
