The worldwide craze known as rock-balancing or stone-balancing has surfaced on the western shore of Roys Bay in Lake Wanaka.

The independent public art form, known also as rock-stacking, has been described as rocks balanced on top of one another, often in what appear to be physically impossible and improbable positions, and without the use of adhesives, wires, supports, rings or any other contraptions that would help maintain the construction's balance.

It is also described as a type of problem solving, a magic trick for the mind and a skill in awareness.

The identity or identities of rock balancers often remain unknown, as they create in remote areas where there may be little or no audience.

When and by whom the Wanaka rock-balancing structures were created is a mystery.
