Wao Aotearoa general manager Monique Kelly announced the charity’s strategy for the coming year in a statement this week.
"Climate action must be local, practical and collectively held.
"Our 2026 strategy is about strengthening the systems already emerging in our community — and ensuring the decisions we make today protect the wellbeing of our mokopuna 100 years from now.
"We want everyone to be part of shaping that future," Ms Kelly said.
The statement said Wao’s 2026 strategy strengthened its role as "a catalyst for climate action".
Ms Kelly said change did not happen alone.
"It happens when communities, institutions, and leaders come together with a shared purpose, our work is and will always be about collective action," she said.
The charitable trust was founded in 2018 by Arna Craig and Monique Kelly.
Student’s work recognised
Wao Aotearoa celebrated the end of the year by presenting their annual sustainability award to Mount Aspiring College student Nico Pettit.
Nico was recognised for her outstanding contribution to environmental initiatives and community leadership.
Reflecting on her recognition, Nico said she was grateful for the support Wao gave students who were passionate about environmental initiatives.
"This award helps encourage me to continue to put my effort into advocating for sustainable initiatives within the college and community," she said.
