Invercargill member of Parliament Eric Roy is confident those proposing to build a 127km toll road between Haast and the Hollyford Valley in South Westland have the resources to make it happen.
He met representatives of the Westland District Council's property company - Westland Properties Ltd - in Parliament yesterday. He told the Otago Daily Times after what he described as a ''strategy meeting'' he was ''very supportive'' of the road and the project was ''coming together''.
Mr Roy said there were overseas people with New Zealand connections interested in the project and he suggested a road could be built by a consortium.
''There is actually a number of potential funding sources who have indicated their interest in the project, and some have gone a bit further than that and are kind of in a group that are probably going to get first opportunity.''
A road through the region was surveyed in 1884 and its current status was an issue still being explored, Mr Roy said.
''The status of the surveyed road will have a bearing on what a consenting minister might or might not have to do, and so that's the issue we are just trying to get some resolution around at this stage.''
