Jackson Bay landmark, The Craypot, has new owners who are itching to open this tourist season.

Dayna Buchanan, of Haast, and her sister Nicolle Buchanan, of Glenorchy, recently purchased the food caravan off Meg Ede, who owned it for 13-14 years.

Built in Timaru to be used as a pie cart, it was moved to Cromwell during construction of the Clyde Dam.

When the dam was completed it ended up as the Cromwell pie cart. Seventeen years ago a Haast local towed it into town behind a tractor and set it up at its current location overlooking Jackson Bay, opening it as The Craypot.

Ms Buchanan said she had worked there full-time initially, then part-time, for most of the time Ms Ede owned it.

"I just love it. I love Jackson Bay and it's right on the beach ... you can see the dolphins.

" They hope to reopen in September, and are spending weekends tidying it up.

The Westland District Council has also just put in a rockwall in front in the wake of Cyclone Fehi in February.
