Cold and rain didn't dampen the enthusiasm of ball-goers at Roncalli College's ‘‘Race Day'' ball.

Unique among South Canterbury high school balls for its sit-down dinner, the event attracted 235 year 12 and 13 pupils. Arriving by house bus, sulky, a husky-pulled sled, and even a mini-wagon train pulled by a lawnmower, they arrived at the Landing Service Building to find it decked out in hats and costume props supplied by the South Canterbury Drama League.

Meanwhile, the theme for Mountainview High School's year 12 and 13 ball was "White Christmas", complete with snowflakes, a Christmas tree and plenty of frostcloth for that snow-covered look.
