Central Southland College’s (CSC) 2025 NCEA scholarships results make impressive reading — 13 scholarships, one outstanding scholarship from only six students.
Year 12 student Alex Brinkworth won scholarships in physics, calculous and digital technologies.
Year 13 students who won scholarships were Ryan Nattrass in history, Deacon Kynan-Wilde in music and English, Oliver White in digital technologies and economics, Ryan O’Callaghan in English and Lucas Gill in classical studies, history, calculus, English and an outstanding scholarship in physics.
Assistant principal Alicia Harrison said while students had received scholarships in the past this was the highest amount in one year and spread across a range of subjects.
‘‘We are incredibly proud of their hard work, effort and subsequent achievements.
‘‘We are going to have to have a second scholarship recognition board built to acknowledge the results.’’
Staff were proud of all students who attempted scholarship examinations whether they were successful or not.
‘‘They represent a group of students who have been dedicated to higher levels of learning throughout their whole time at CSC and who were willing to take on extra learning to reach their goals.’’
The students were also supportive of each other and ‘‘a highly passionate, dedicated teaching staff who regularly go the extra mile to help students achieve their best in whatever they want to pursue’’.
Assistant principal Cameron Davis said the scholarships represented the highest academic challenge available at secondary school and demanded a depth of critical thinking that extended far beyond the standard NCEA curriculum.
‘‘Generally, the NZQA reserves this distinction for 3% of the total cohort enrolled in a given subject.
‘‘For those who demonstrate true mastery in the subject, the outstanding scholarship is awarded, which is an accolade typically reserved for the top 0.3%-1% of students nationwide.’’
