The Manapouri Hall was reopened late last month after all the asbestos on an outside wall was contained.
Southland District Council chief executive Cameron McIntosh said in a statement, the council used a licensed asbestos removal expert to seal and paint the area where the material was, and to clean up the ground under the area. It had been inspected and given a clearance certificate.
This would be given to WorkSafe as well.
The hall was closed for a week as a precautionary measure, while additional air monitoring was done around the hall and the cleanup completed outside, Mr McIntosh said.
The air monitoring inside the hall and entranceways detected no asbestos particles in the air, and a clearance certificate was also given for that.
"We are pleased to get the hall open as fast we could, and that people can feel safe using it," he said.
