Southland National MP Joseph Mooney has denied claims he is a "troublemaking MP", reaffirming his support of the party and Prime Minister Chris Luxon while expressing his "disappointment" at the allegations.

Mr Mooney said broadcaster Mike Hosking’s allegation he was one of the "famous five" MPs who were causing issues within the National Party ahead of its caucus yesterday were untrue and unfounded.

"I can say I fully support the prime minister and our caucuses are all united behind him.

"We are focused, as we should be, on what New Zealanders need in a trying time.

"It’s really disappointing frankly that [Mr Hosking] didn’t contact me before spreading my name through the media.

"I don’t know where this comes from, but it wasn’t a good process and I categorically refute it."

Mr Luxon survived yesterday’s confidence vote and remains leader of the National Party.
