Police have confirmed a man struck by a car in Invercargill on Monday afternoon is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
A police spokesman said no charges had been laid but investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
Emergency services were called to the scene by the level crossing in Elles Rd about 3.30pm.
Traffic from Tay and Tweed Sts was diverted for about two hours while police carried out a scene examination.
A witness told the Otago Daily Times they saw a vehicle quickly travelling up Elles Rd before the accident.
A tow truck removed a white station wagon from the scene.
