Two men who have given exceptional service to the Central Indoor Bowls sub-centre have been recognised with life membership awards.

The presentations were made to Wayne Malcolm and Terry McGimpsey at the sub-centre’s annual Anzac day charity bowls tournament.

Former president Grant Kean and current president Dermot Fennelly read the citations for the awards.

Mr Kean said in the late 1980s when Mr Malcolm started playing it was clear he was not only there to play bowls.

“He was here to contribute, to uplift and to lead.”

Throughout the years he had played, selected teams, was the sub-centre’s Southland delegate and served in office-bearing roles.

His steady leadership, willingness to step up and unwavering support for others shaped not only the organisation, but the people within it, Mr Kean said.

“[He] helped build a community that feels like family.”

Mr Fennelly said Mr McGimpsey also started playing bowls in the late 1980s.

Not only was Mr McGimpsey a longstanding player but he had also umpired the game, Mr Fennelly said.

He was the Central delegate to the Southland umpires and measurers group for many years.

This itself was an indication of the kind of person Mr McGimpsey was.

“Umpiring isn’t glamorous.

“It’s not the role people rush toward.

“It’s a job for someone who values fairness, consistency and service, and that has always been Terry.”

He had also served in office-bearing roles.
