Rylan Hall’s design has been selected as the logo for the Hedgehope Makarewa Catchment Group.
The logo will be displayed in several locations within the catchment group area.
"[I was] happy and excited for my design to be chosen because the logo will be there for hundreds of years," Rylan, 11, said.
He produced four different versions of a logo using a computer programme.
He chose elements from the environment including the bush, the Hokonui Hills and the Makarewa River and arranged them in different ways.
He chose the third design because it best represented the landscape but the view shown in the logo was not an actual place.
"I created it myself."
It had been "very easy" designing the logo, he said.
Hedgehope School principal Daniel Withington said catchment group co-ordinator Sarah Horne approached him about the students designing a logo that would represent the area.
It had been important to involve Hokonui Runanga in the design process and kaitoko mātauraka Jo Brand had sent staff members to talk about the area and the taniwha Matamata that rests in the hills, Mr Withington said.
While working on their individual designs the children had the opportunity to walk around, offer each other feedback and be inspired by what others were doing, he said.
The challenge was to produce a logo that would be easy to read from a car window, he said.
This had been achieved through using contrasting colours and dark and light.
Rylan had been "blase" about how easy it was to put the logo together, Mr Withington said.
"He said yes, because he’s so savvy.
"He’s very creative in his mind, and he got really into it, and there was a lot of input from others but essentially, it’s his own design.
"He’s very talented with his creation, particularly on a digital platform."
Catchment group chairwoman Sally Hammond said the group had worked with the school community before on different projects and it was Sarah Thorne’s idea to get the students to design the logo.
Mr Withington chose the best designs and group members voted for their choice.
"Rylan’s design was picked because it got the most votes and it depicted what our catchment area contains.
"It had to be easy to read as well."
