Te Anau Rugby Club is having a successful season.

Lock forward Harry McCallum captains the senior team and has on-field leadership support from prop Kane Prentice and No 8 Grant Taylor.

Preseason games against Albion and DLS were played and won in Te Anau in early March. There was also time for a bus trip to Wanaka to play against Upper Clutha

Te Anau was then one of 16 teams in the combined division two and three grades to start the competition.

The ‘Bush Chooks’ beat Wakatipu B 35-0 in round one in Te Anau but the following week on the same field, the boys were beaten by Midlands 57-5.

The Bedford Compton Shield was up for grabs in their round three match at Mossburn. After leading 8-7 at halftime Te Anau went on to win 27-12.

The Blackmount Hill Shield was the prize when Te Anau took on Waiau Star in Tuatapere. Te Anau won 27-21 and became the inaugural holders of the shield which was provided by the Robertson family.

It was “sponsors day" at the Te Anau club on May 16 but the senior team lost their challenge for the Graeme Gaffa Mullally Memorial Cup against Ohai Nightcaps-Otautau 37-15.

Te Anau had recorded three wins from their five games in the first phase of the competition which was enough to qualify them for one of the eight spots in the division two grade for the remainder of the season.

Te Anau’s first division two game was away from home against Woodlands B and resulted in a 34-24 win.

There was no club rugby played on King’s Birthday weekend but five Te Anau players did get to play some rugby.

Kane Prentice, Harry McCallum, Grant Taylor, Riley Stirling and Jared Reid were in the Northern Southland sub-union team that played in Mossburn on Saturday against Central, Western and Eastern. The Northern team was co-coached by Te Anau's Barry Taylor.

The major action around Te Anau over the long weekend was the rugby club's main fundraising event of the year - The Big Three hunting competition weigh-in at the rugby grounds on Sunday afternoon. The prizes on offer for the successful hunters were sought after again this year.

Te Anau has seven Small Blacks teams (primary school aged) and an Intermediate grade team for the teenagers. Front rower Archie Jones is a talented young sportsman as his brother Jonty at first five.

This Saturday Te Anau will host Central Pirates. The intermediate side will play their match tonight (Thursday) at 7pm in Riverton.
