Drawn from the gallery’s permanent collection, the selection included cherished favourites and rarely seen works, offering fresh perspectives on familiar forms, gallery programmes officer Marcella Geddes said.

Featured artists include Rob McLeod, Don Driver, Mabel Hill, Petrus van der Velden, Liz Whitney Quisgard, Jeffrey Harris, Rangimarie Stevenson and Mike Friend.

“This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to reintroduce works that haven’t been on display for some time," Ms Geddes said in a statement.

"It’s a chance to reflect on the enduring appeal of red and the many ways artists have harnessed its emotional and symbolic depth.

"We’re especially pleased to include recent gifts to the collection alongside long-standing favourites.”

The exhibition runs until February 15. Admission is free. — Allied Media
