Last Friday night, though, over 50 people rocked up for a fundraising competition to help out one of their members heading overseas for cricket glory.
Cricketer Keiran Lloyd has won just about every award in the local cricket circuit, most recently All-rounder and Cricketer of the Year.
But after a freak accident on the rugby pitch left him with a broken ankle and tibia which required surgery, Lloyd was out of commission with the cricket season looming.
After the injury had healed, he joined Shift Body & Mind, first starting with PT under team-mate and personal trainer Rob Maropai, before moving on to class sessions, which was a boon to his recovery, Lloyd said.
"[Rob] broke it down to fundamental movements, a lot of mobility, not going crazy on the weights, just a lot of movement," he said.
"I actually really enjoy the classes too. It’s been really good for the strength not only for my ankle, but for the whole leg, building it back up," Lloyd said.
Despite being told he would need 12 to 18 months’ recovery, Lloyd found himself back on the pitch this summer, leading to a few more awards.
Now Lloyd will be heading overseas to Newmarket in England, playing for a team while also coaching junior teams, with only a month’s notice.
Not one to shy away from helping out, Mr Maropai said the team at Shift created a friendly competition, encouraging teams to enter for a small fee to help out.
"We just thought to get him on his feet, we’d do our part to help our friend out in his journey," he said.
Do their part they did, with nine teams along with supporters flocking to Shift to raise over $500 towards Lloyd’s costs.
Lloyd said it was a big help, and a great last hurrah at Shift before he headed overseas.
"I’m happy with anything raised. I just really appreciate everything Shift have done to help me out.
"The vibe was really good — everyone was having a laugh and enjoying themselves. Went to the Moon afterwards, so it was quite social," he said.
Now with less than a week before he heads to England, Lloyd said he was finally letting himself get pumped up for the big move.
"I’m excited. Been trying to hold it back for a few weeks knowing it was coming closer, but the excitement level is high," he said.
