The Mataura River will have the mighty roar and rush of jet-boats racing up and down later this month as the NZ Jet Boat Marathon returns.

On October 25, the fourth leg of the NZ Jet Boat Marathon will be held on the Mataura River, racing beginning at 9am and continuing through the day.

Keelow Craft Boats owner and marathon organiser Paul Cross said the event had a lot of competitors and a variety of boats.

"Boats are set off a minute apart.

"Got about 25 boats for this year, ranging from 17 to 24 foot [5.2m-7.3m] with four different classes.

"It’s going to be quite a spectacle."

The marathon jet-boats are custom-made for both speed and endurance, and it was thrilling to watch, Mr Cross said.

"The lower class do about 80mph [128kmh], all the way through to the unlimited class.

"Some of them have helicopter engines in them, or jet turbines, and do up to 140mph [225kmh] on a river, with no brakes.

"It’s an adrenaline rush sport."

Mr Cross said the event was completely free to watch.

There were plenty of spots to watch along the Mataura River, he said.

"The Mataura is a really good viewing river.

"If you can spare the time, do. It is a Friday, but if you can it’s a great way to fill in a couple of hours.

"Find a beach or a bank and have a watch."

Mr Cross also thanked the local sponsors for the event: Livestock Supplies, Harrison Supplies and Sign Advertising in Gore.
