Looking back

In January 1887 a company was formed to construct and operate a dairy factory in Mataura, which was up and running by November of that year.

Water for use in the milk and cheese making processes was obtained from a private spring while power was provided by a steam engine powered by local lignite.

It was converted to electric power in 1917.

By the 1970s the company was in financial trouble and it closed in May 1980, when dairy processing in the area was concentrated at the Edendale Dairy Factory.
