A Waimahaka man who rolled his ute in April could not recall the incident due to a brain injury sustained in a previous crash.

Dylan Mark Hair, 31, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving while disqualified and one of careless driving, when he appeared in the Gore District Court last week.

On April 11, Hair was at a gathering in a farm shed.

The court heard the head injury he sustained in 2023 after crashing into a power pole had left him ‘‘overwhelmed’’ in crowded environments, so he left.

At 7.30pm he was driving unaccompanied in Gregory Rd, Waimahaka, which is unsealed.

According to the police statement, he failed to navigate around an ‘‘easy’’ left-hand corner and veered to the right on to grass and up a steep bank.

The slope caused the Hilux he was driving to roll on to its roof and land on the road.

No injuries were reported.

Hair’s mother, who accompanied the defendant in court last week, said she had picked him up after the incident, as she lived nearby.

The court heard his mother said her son was ‘‘delirious’’ after rolling the vehicle and could not recall what happened.

When asked in court why he crashed again, Hair said it was ‘‘to do with my brain injury, I’d say’’.

Hair was fined $400 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Judge Walker told Hair he would find himself back in court if he got behind the wheel again.

It was his fifth careless-driving charge. He also has five drink-driving convictions.
