
Mr Thompson brings more than two decades of leadership and community experience, including senior roles in local government and the not-for-profit sector.
His previous positions include chief executive of YMCA Southland, alongside community and governance roles as chairman of the Southland Community Broadcasters Charitable Trust and director of Stadium Southland.
A dedicated sports enthusiast and instructor, he has also been involved in governance of sporting entities at a national level.
In a statement, Hospice Southland said Mr Thompson was widely recognised for his ability to unite people around a shared purpose.
Mr Thompson said he felt privileged to lead an organisation so deeply woven into the fabric of Murihiku and Whakatipu.
"It is an honour to join Hospice Southland and to be part of something that represents the very best of who we are — caring, resilient and connected.
"Hospice Southland is more than a service; it’s a reflection of our people, our aroha and our collective strength as a community."
Board chairwoman Helen McCurdy said Mr Thompson’s appointment marked a significant and positive step for Hospice Southland’s future.

Hospice Southland ambassador Suzanne Prentice welcomed the appointment, describing it as an exciting new chapter.
