Tū Tane, a group for men, has started at Te Whanau o Hokonui Marae.

The group is co-ordinated by Gore man Wayne Turipa.

There was a need for men to spend time together, Mr Turipa said.

"Men find it hard to express themselves with their spouses and with anyone else.

"Men seem to want to share a little bit more about what’s going on with them in an environment with other men."

The aim of the group was to support men in their various roles as partners and fathers.

Tū tane meant to stand tall as a man.

"Stepping out and stepping up."

Men could share whatever was on their hearts.

"It’s a safe environment.

"It’s a non-judgemental sort of environment."

Sometimes men were told to "toughen up", which did not help them process what they were going through.

"We are more about getting men to open up."

He had advertised the group on social media and had a good response from women, who were encouraging their partners to attend.

"This thing will be by word of mouth."
