Dunedin distance runner Shireen Crumpton (Hill City) intends to step up a notch and celebrate her 40th birthday by racing the 60km Kepler Challenge in December.

She turned 40 on October 10 and is looking for another challenge to take into her next decade.

The Dunedin nurse is an experienced marathon runner and has represented New Zealand at two World Cups.

She ran her best time of 2hr 37min 03sec at the World Cup in Helsinki in 2005 and also competed at Berlin last year.

Crumpton will race her fourth marathon of the year in defending the New Zealand title at Auckland on October 31. She won at Invercargill last year.

She will race the Kepler Challenge from Te Anau on December 4.

Crumpton has already raced marathons on the the Gold Coast (fifth in 2hr 41min), Noumea (first in 2hr 59min 40sec) and the Lydiard Legends at Auckland (first in 2hr 59min) this year.

She won her fourth silver medal at the New Zealand 10km road championships when finishing the Auckland event in 34min 36sec last Sunday. She won the gold medal in 2008.

Fellow Hill City runner Rachel Kingsford was third in 34min 50sec.

Danielle Trevis (Auckland) took off at the start and won her first New Zealand senior title at the age of 19.

The national junior cross-country champion was through the 2.5km in 7min 58sec, the 5km in 16min 17sec and went on to smash the race record by 21sec with a time of 32min 41sec. Kate McIlroy (Wellington) set the record of 33min 20sec in 2005.

Crumpton was stunned by the performance of Trevis.

"I couldn't believe it when she took off at the start. We were all thinking we will catch her eventually, but she just motored," Crumpton said.

"It was a very impressive run. She's got a lot of talent."
