Oli Chignell and Shireen Crumpton dominated their respective races to win the men's and women's Otago 5000m titles at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

Chignell (18), of Hill City University, controlled the race from start to finish to chalk up a comfortable win in 15min 29.16sec.

Rob Creasy (36), of Leith, was next best in 16min 0.33sec, while 24-year-old Caversham runner Alex Dodds was third in 16min 25.64sec.

Crumpton (45), who won the Otago 10,000m title last December, completed the double in emphatic fashion.

Her win in 18min 21.41sec doubled as an Otago masters record in the 45-49 section, and she finished more than 25sec ahead of second-placed Hanna English.

English (18), of Ariki, who finished second in the Otago 10,000m championships behind Crumpton, again crossed in that position, in 18min 46.96sec.

Sabrina Grogan (22), of Hill City-University, was third in 19min 3.84sec.

Meanwhile in Hamilton, Otago athletes were competing at the annual Porritt Classic.

Andrew Whyte (22) was the pick of the bunch, continuing his good form to win the men's 400m in 47.52sec.

His winning time was 0.02sec quicker than the time he clocked on his way to victory at the Capital Classic in Wellington last month, but still well short of his goal - an Olympic B qualifier (45.80sec).

However, he is building nicely towards the national championships in Dunedin in less than three weeks. He also plans to seek stiffer competition in Australia and the United States in the next few months.

Three-time national hammer throw champion Nicole Bradley, of Taieri, had to settle for second in the women's event on Saturday.

Bradley (23) managed a 57.89m heave but was outgunned by Julia Ratcliffe, of Hamilton, whose sixth throw (66.53m) was far too good.

Jerram Huston (30), of Taieri, finished second in the men's shot put with a 14.29 put.

Ryan Ballantyne, of Hamilton, won with a 17.94m effort.

Hill City-University hurdler Maddy Spence crossed the line in 63.21sec to finish fourth.
