Visiting German pupil Davina Hamaan (Hill City) won a silver medal in the women's aged 16 heptathlon at Tauranga yesterday.
Hamaan, an exchange pupil at Otago Girls' High School, finished runner-up with a personal best score of 4229 points.
She was 238 points behind Paige Harwood (Auckland), who won the event with 4467 points.
Hamaan gave a consistent display and topped 600 points in four of her seven events.
Her best performance was in the 200m when she scored 682 points with her time of 27.36sec.
She scored 652 points with her javelin throw of 39.19m.
She finished third in this event at the New Zealand secondary school championships in December.
Her total score was 586 points better than her score when she finished third at the German junior championships last year.
Eilish Forward (Taieri) finished fifth, with a score of 3212.
Otago's other medal at the multi-events championships was won by King's High School pupil Mackenzie Haugh, who finished second in the men's aged 16 octathlon, with 4889 points.
It beat the Otago record standard by 389 points.
He bettered 600 points in six of the eight events, his best score of 734 points coming in the 1000m a time of 2min 53.07sec.
Haugh was lying third after the first day but moved up to the silver medal with consistent performances on the final day.
His javelin throw of 45.20m was a massive personal best by 11m.
Haugh was 521 points behind Luke Davison (Tauranga) who won the gold medal with 5410 points.
Michael Jolly finished fifth with 3913 points.
Jarrod Adams finished sixth in the senior men's event with 4174 points and John Gilmour fourth in the junior men's event with 5366 points.
