The Otago Girls High School's under-15 sprint relay team is on target to achieve its double goal at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Hamilton this December.

The team of Monika Qauqau (13), Maddy McKinlay (14), Ella Johnston (14) and Isobel Terpstra (14) broke a 10-year-old record by winning the 4x100m relay in 51.21sec at the South Island secondary schools athletics championships in Timaru last weekend.

The Jarrod Adams-coached team beat Rangiora High School's record by 1.30sec.

There was just one change from the team which won the junior girls' 4x100m title at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Wanganui last December. Terpstra replaced Hannah Williams (15) in the team.

Qauqau is the daughter of Ben Qauqau who played four games for the Otago rugby team in 1989.

The Otago Girls team is in the final year of a three-year plan to win both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays in Hamilton.

Hannah Williams won the girls' under-16 80m hurdles in 13.08sec.

Alex Gorrie (Kavanagh) was the other Otago record breaker at the championships when he won the boys' under-16 1500m in 4min 13.69sec. He broke Max Smith's (Kings) eight-year-old record.

Smith, who is on an athletics scholarship at Providence, in Rhode Island, has since broken four minutes for the mile.

One of the best Otago performances came from Bryce Morgan (Otago Boys), who won the senior boys' 3000m in a personal best time of 8min 51.45sec.

He has reduced his 3000m time this season by 1min 10sec. He came second in the 1500m in 4min 08.48sec.

Daniel Balchin (Kings) also ran a personal best time when coming second in 8min 54.25sec. Balchin was second in the 2km steeplechase in 6min 31.86sec.

Robert Brown (Kings) won the senior boys' 800m in 1min 59.32sec and Leslie Taylor (Otago Boys) won the 300m hurdles in 41.68sec.

Todd Johnston (Otago Boys) won the boys' under-16 sprint double - the 100m in 11.39sec and the 200m in 23.22sec.

Bethany Struthers (Taieri) won an unusual double by winning the senior girls' 100m (12.54sec) and hammer throw (38.61sec).

Charlotte Gardiner (Mount Aspiring) won the senior girls' high jump with 1.50m and Phillipa Mackay (Queens) the girls' open pole vault in 2.60m.

Devon Helm (Bayfield) won the girls' under-16 200m in 26.71sec and was runner-up in the 100m in 13.01sec.
