Athletics: Otago Boys' too strong

The senior boys race at the Milton cross-country relays yesterday was convincingly won by Otago Boys' High School.

The team of William Scorgie, Nick Elder, Tom Woodhaugh, Robbie Mears, Jared Hewitt and Michael Ogle won by 54sec in 38min 23sec.

John McGlashan was second in 39min 17sec and Gore High School third in 39min 40sec.

Alex Gorrie (Kavanagh) ran the fastest individual lap time in 5min 52sec, with Aaron Masters (Gore ) second in 6min 02sec and Ogle third in 6min 05sec.

The senior girls race was won by the St Hilda's team of Amelia Kinnaird, Ruby Smith, Laura McKay and Rebekah Greene in 28min 27sec from Bayfield High School in 29min 28sec and Otago Girls High School in 30min 13sec.

Greene ran the fastest lap in 28min 27sec.

Otago Boys won the junior boys race in 41min 03sec from John McGlashan in 41min 13sec and King's in 42min 07sec.

Chris McNoe (Otago Boys) ran the fastest lap time of 6min 33sec.

Sian English ran the fastest time in the junior girls race and took her Columba College team to a win in 30min 37sec from St Hilda's in 31min 24sec and Queen's in 32min 33sec.

There was a large entry of 310 runners for the event, the largest number for a secondary schools cross-country event run in Otago for about 30 years.

A busload of runners came from Gore High School.

Brent Halley was re-elected president at the annual meeting of Athletics Otago on Monday night.

The centre had budgeted for a deficit of just under $8000 but treasurer Graham Anderson was able to achieve an operating surplus of $4147 because of prudent financial management.

The centre plans to open up entry to centre events to non-registered runners during the harrier season.

The Caversham club will be holding a marathon seminar on June 10 to help runners prepare for the Dunedin marathon on September 12.

The guest speakers are the New Zealand team's athletics manager at the Beijing Olympics, Raylene Bates, physiotherapist Geoff Anderson, nutritionist Megan Gibbons and Caversham coach Dave Stinson.
