Scholten (34) broke the masters men's aged 30 to 34 hammer throw record by a massive 3.10m with his winning throw of 38.51m.
He held five New Zealand masters records last season and his form on Saturday indicated he should add to his collection during this summer season. His sequence of throws were foul, foul, 34.08m, 35.41m, 38.51m, foul.
There were also two Otago masters records broken in the throwing events.
Raylene Bates (Taieri) broke a 10-year old record in the women's aged 45 to 49 hammer throw of 34.53m. The old mark was thrown by Winifred Harding (Leith), who was an official at the throwing circle on Saturday.
The other record was set in the men's aged 45 to 49 heavyweight throw by Stephen Rusbatch (Leith) with a distance of 9.09m. It beat the old record by 58cm.
There were also personal best performances in the younger age groups. Dean Rusbatch (Taieri) improved by 3.5m when he won the men's aged 18 to 20 hammer throw with 56.20m, while clubmate Todd Bates broke the 50m barrier for the first time when he finished second in the same grade with a throw of 50.73m. It was a personal best throw by 4.67m.
Hamish Finnie (Hill City-University) won the senior men's hammer throw with a distance of 44.73m using the 7.26kg implement. He also won the senior men's discus with a throw of 41.34m.
Jade Graham (Gore), the New Zealand women's under-17 champion last season, won the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.01m.
A group of Southland athletes travelled to Dunedin to get competition before the New Zealand secondary school championships that will be held in the city in December.
One of the most impressive was Arthur Smith (Winton), who won the men's aged 15 long jump with 5.48m.
Jordan Rackham (Invercargill), who won a bronze medal in the men's under-17 New Zealand championships last season, improved by three seconds when he won the open 2km steeplechase in 6min 30.39sec.
Christina Taylor (St Pauls, Invercargill) won the women's 800m in a personal best time of 2min 18.13sec. She leaves for the United States next year on a sports scholarship at North Texas University.
Josh Browne (Ariki) came within .3 of a second of breaking a four-year-old Otago aged 15 record when he came third in men's 800m in 1min 58.47sec.
Larissa Dyke (Taieri), a member of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics wider training squad, easily won the women's 100m in 12.80sec.
Sam Bremer (Hill City-University) came close to a personal best time when he won the men's 3000m in 9min 5.85sec. He was third in the New Zealand secondary schools road race in Wellington last year.
