Andrew Whyte (South Otago) wanted to run a fast 400m.

His goal is the national championships in Dunedin in two weeks.

The Otago secondary school championships at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday was a practice run for the big one.

Whyte (17) is ranked third in the country in the men's aged 19 grade with his Otago championship time of 48.12sec.

"I wanted to run faster today," Whyte said. "But it was tough and I staggered down the last 100m."

The Jim Baird-trained athlete was in a class of his own in the one lap sprint around the Caledonian Ground.

Whyte floated easily around the track in his new gold-coloured carbon fibre running spikes in 48.17sec to claim the senior boys title from Greg Redai (Dunstan) 53.99sec and Ben Jowsey (Kaikorai Valley) 55.78sec.

It broke his old record by a massive 3.17sec and it was the second best time of his career.

Whyte made it a double in the senior boys sprints when he also won the 200m in another record time of 22.48sec ahead of Tim Lawrence (Otago Boys', 23.45sec) and Jack Allan (St Kevin's, 23.76sec).

It beat the record of 22.56sec that Craig Sneddon (Otago Boys') ran in 2004.

It was a remarkable day of dazzling performances with 23 records broken.

Rebekah Greene (St Hilda's) was the major record breaker in the senior girls events and achieved it by running from the front and setting new marks in the 800m and 1500m.

She beat the six-year-old 800m record of Rosa Scott (St Hilda's) by 7sec with her winning time of 2min 13.82sec.

The minor placings went to Caitlin O'Brien (St Hilda's, 2min 18.13sec) and Shauna Pali (Kavanagh, 2min 18.98sec), who both ran faster than the old record.

Greene (17), who is ranked second on the women's aged 19 national ranking list, excelled herself when she won the 1500m in 4min 23.85sec, which was the third-fastest time of her career.

Megan McPhail (Waitaki Girls') won the senior girls 100m (12.95sec) and 200m (25.83sec) sprint double.

She broke the 200m record that was run by last year's New Zealand secondary schools double sprint champion Lauren Wilson (Queen's).

Luisa Schmidt Rave (Otago Girls') extended the 2002 senior girls triple jump record by a metre when she jumped 11.05m and lowered the 2002 100m hurdles record to 16sec.

Brent Cheshire (Otago Boys') extended the senior boys high jump record by a centimetre when he jumped 1.86m.

Pali lowered the senior girls 3000m record by a massive 23sec when she won the title in 10min 21.24sec.

Katrina Andrew (Otago Girls'), second in 10min 25.30sec, also beat the old record.

Jowsey lowered the senior boys 800m record by 3sec with his winning time of 1min 57.96sec.

The Columba College senior girls 4 x 100m relay team of Renaye Flockton, Sophie Napper, Samara Dalzeil and Melissa Austen ran a record time of 51.61sec.

Jack Henry, the head boy of Shirley Boys' High School, had a weekend away from the earthquake ravaged Christchurch and won the senior boys 110m hurdles in 15.63sec from Michael Jolly (Otago Boys) 16.64sec.

Other record breakers were: Courtney Martin (East Otago), girls under-14 shot put (11.27m); Kawana Tokona (East Otago), boys under-14 triple jump (10.82m); Mackenzie Haugh (King's), boys under-16 long jump (6.31m); Nikita White (Otago Girls'), AWD 100m (16.33sec) with Aleisha Bryant (Taieri) second (17.14m) and 200m (34.27sec); Josh Browne (John McGlashan), boys under-14 1500m (4min 31.56sec) and 3000m (9min 52.34sec); Chris McNoe (Otago Boys'), boys under-15 1500m (4min 25.85sec) and Rhian Ward (Dunstan) second (4min 26.32sec); Ricky White (Sara Cohen), AWD 200m (26.27sec); Hamish Cooper (Otago Boys'), boys under-15 3000m (9min 41.66sec); Sam Hollows (South Otago), girls under-16 400m (60.45sec); Rhian Ward (Dunstan), boys under-15 800m (2min 07.43sec) and McNoe second (2min 12.54sec).
