Hammer throwers on form at Caledonian

Hammer thrower Mike Scholten was in record-breaking form at the Caledonian on Friday night.

Scholten (38) threw 45.82m, breaking his own Otago men’s 35+ hammer record by more than 2m.

His previous mark stood at 43.74m.

The Taieri athlete, who also holds the men’s 30+ record of 40.12m, broke the record with his first attempt of the meeting.

Fellow Taieri thrower Todd Bates (22) managed 50.69m to record the best throw of the day.

In the women’s competition Mayce Ballantyne (22) threw 42.86 to win the 20-34 grade  and Raylene Bates won the 35+ competition convincingly with 41.81m.

Tori Peeters broke 50m for the first time this season as she continues on her return from injury.

The Taieri athlete won the women’s javelin, throwing 53.19m on her last attempt.

The national record holder made  a reasonable improvement on the 49.78m she managed last week, as the continues to work her way back after missing a large part of the year.

Laura Overton, also of Taieri, finished second in the event with a throw of 43.02m.

On the track Jacob Granger (18), of Taieri, and Sam Stewart (19), of Invercargill, tied for first in the men’s 100m with a time of 12.12sec.

Felix McDonald trailed in third with 12.15sec. Nineteen-year-old Christina Ashton won the women’s race in 13.05sec, from Fiona Centers who ran 13.07sec.

McDonald got one back over Granger in the 400m, running 51.14sec to win the event by more than a second.

Caversham’s Alex Dodds (24) ran 4min 07.70sec to win the men’s 1500m, while Nathan Hill (16), of Leith, finished in 4min 09.34sec to win his grade.
