Otago competitors to fore at Lovelock Classic

Several Otago athletes featured prominently at the weekend's Lovelock Classic in Timaru.

The first of five Classic meetings around New Zealand, the field contained many of the South Island's top athletes.

Strong winds made for some fast, although wind-assisted, 100m times.

North Otago's Schuyler Orr was one of three runners to break 11sec in the men's race.

The 19-year-old ran 10.99sec to finish third, beating Taieri's Felix McDonald, who was fifth in an also sharp time of 11.05sec.

Canterbury's Scott Walker claimed the title in 10.82sec.

Fiona Centers (Hill City-University) ran an impressive 12.19sec in the women's race to finish fourth.

She then went two better in the 200m, claiming second in 24.90sec.

McDonald was also involved in a strong long jump contest with defending national champion Jesse Bryant.

It was Bryant who won though, jumping 7.27m to McDonald's 7.17m.

Hill City-University's Cameron Miller claimed third with 6.66m.

Sam Gouverneur (Taieri) had a strong showing in the men's 400m, running 51.54sec to finish second behind Wellington's Jacob Matson.

Oli Chignell managed third in the feature event, the Lovelock Mile.

He ran 4min 19.52sec, but was edged by former Otago runner Daniel Balchin in 4min 18.31sec, and winner Sam Petty, who ran 4min 17.17sec.

Tara McNally ran 14.95sec to claim the women's under-18 100m hurdles title, while finishing second in the 300m hurdles in 47.47sec.

Emma McKay finished fifth in both the women's discus and long jump, while also coming eighth in the B 100m race.

Athletics begins again in Dunedin with the Oceania Masters Championships on January 20-27.
