A southern team claimed a silver medal on the national schools stage at the weekend.

The Southland-Otago relay team finished second in the provincial 5x2km cross-country race in Hawera.

Kennedy Taylor (Southland Girls’ High School), Siena Mackley (Wakatipu High School), Catherine Lund (Otago Girls’ High School), Emily Hay (James Hargest College) and Samantha Fookes (Wakatipu High School) finished in 37min 59.1sec.

They came in 1min 24sec behind the winning Auckland team and edged third-placed Waikato Bay of Plenty by three seconds.

Taylor was the highest placed of that group in the senior girls 4km race, finishing sixth and being named in the paper New Zealand schools team.

Meanwhile, Mackley finished eighth in the year 9 girls race.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
