Basketball: Magic too skilful for Otago Boys

Otago Boys High School turned in an encouraging performance but could not quite match the skill set of the Magic, losing 89-73 in the men's premier tournament.

The Magic was missing regular starters Mitch McCrae and Jordan Small and OBHS was without Chris Hood and veteran Brent Matehaere.

Hayden Miller had a busy first half for the Magic, scoring 14 of his 16 points to help his team build an eight-point lead by half-time.

OBHS outscored the Magic 23-20 in the third quarter with Ethan Carruthers finding a hot hand.

But the Magic won the final period 19-14 to win by 16 points.

The Andy Bay Falcons got the better of the Varsity Blaze 91-73.

The win was set up following two excellent opening stanzas after which the Falcons led 56-35.

James Bardsley posted 30 points for the Falcons and Todd Thornley led the way for the Blaze with 22 points.

In the other match, the City Rise Bombers dispatched the Magic 2 87-69.

Former Otago Nugget Steve Robinson had a fine game and Mark Bracewell added 19 points for the Bombers.

For the Magic, Benjamin Dick (16), Scott Robertson (15), Lee Devereux (13) and Josh O'Connell (11) all got into double figures.
