The Bombers (4-5) snared a crucial 88-79 win over Magic A (5-4) in the men's A grade competition on Saturday.
Swingman Steve Robinson scored a team high 26 points to help set up the win, which ended a three game losing skid and ensured the Bombers kept the pressure on fourth placed Varsity A.
Robinson set the tone early, scoring 10 of his side's 21 first quarter points as the Bombers led by one after 10 minutes.
But it was the offensive explosion he sparked in the second quarter with a couple of three pointers that set up the win.
The Bombers outscored the 2013 champion 35-23 in the second quarter on the back of Robinson's shooting to take a handy 56 43 lead at the half.
That blew out to 75-60 at the end of the third quarter, as the Bombers struggled to contain Magic guard Micah Lepaio.
There is something about Lepaio when he plays the Bombers. He torched the boys in green for 31 points on Saturday, including five three pointers.
It was not the first time he has had a big performance against the Bombers. He scored 38 points against them in a match last year, drilling seven three pointers in the process.
But that was nothing on the 11 three pointers he drained in a regular season match between the sides in 2013. Former Otago Boys' High School guard Benoit Hayman added 24 points for the Magic on Saturday, as it chased a fourth quarter rally.
However, despite making a late push, it fell nine points short and missed an opportunity to leapfrog the Falcons into second place on the competition ladder.
Canterbury Rams development player and former Kavanagh College pupil Richie Rodger was in Dunedin for the weekend and made a rare appearance for the Bombers, scoring seven points in limited minutes.
University holidays took its toll on the competition at the weekend, as Varsity B (0-9) defaulted to the St Kilda Saints (8-1) and the Varsity A (4-4) and Falcons A (5-3) match was deferred.
